Their Story
Corporal Daniel Jason Freeman was a 20-year-old soldier from Cincinnati, Ohio. He served with the U.S. Army's Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, part of Combined Joint Task Force-76, based in Vicenza, Italy.
On April 6, 2005, Freeman was killed during combat operations in Ghazni province, located in southeastern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his unit was conducting a patrol when it came under enemy fire. He was one of two American soldiers killed in the engagement.
Freeman's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2005, the conflict had evolved from initial combat operations against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces into a protracted counterinsurgency effort focused on stabilizing the country.
Following his death, Freeman was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of Ohio.
He is remembered on memorials for fallen soldiers from Ohio and by his unit. His name is inscribed on the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment memorial at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
