Their Story
Staff Sergeant Nicholas Charles Fredsti was a 30-year-old paratrooper from San Diego, California. He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On June 15, 2012, Fredsti was killed in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. A contemporaneous report from the Associated Press stated he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
Fredsti's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2012, a surge of U.S. forces had been drawn down, and the conflict was characterized by persistent insurgent attacks, particularly in eastern provinces like Ghazni.
The Army announced his death in a press release on June 18, 2012. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.
Staff Sergeant Fredsti's name is inscribed on Panel 22E, Line 46 of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum's memorial in New York City, which honors those killed in the subsequent wars. He is also listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the San Diego Veterans Museum.
