Their Story
Jacob Lee Frazier was a 24-year-old Staff Sergeant from St. Charles, Illinois. He served with the 169th Air Support Operations Squadron, part of the 182nd Airlift Wing of the Illinois Air National Guard based in Peoria. The unit's mission involved providing tactical air control and battlefield communications support for ground forces.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation's initial phase focused on dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban government in Afghanistan. By early 2003, the conflict had entered a stabilization and counterinsurgency phase.
The Pentagon announced Frazier's death on March 31, 2003. He was the first member of the Illinois Air National Guard to be killed in action since the Korean War. His body was returned to Illinois, and he was buried with military honors.
Frazier is memorialized on the Illinois Fallen Heroes Memorial and the Peoria Air National Guard base. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal.
