U.S. Army Sergeant Daniel Alexander Frazier, 25, of Saint Joseph, Michigan, was killed in a hostile incident at Forward Operating Base Lagman, Afghanistan, on November 19, 2009.
Their Story
Daniel Alexander Frazier was a 25-year-old sergeant from Saint Joseph, Michigan. He served with Company E, 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On November 19, 2009, Sergeant Frazier was killed at Forward Operating Base Lagman in Zabul Province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. A subsequent report from the Associated Press, citing military officials, stated that Frazier died from wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his base with indirect fire, a term often used for rocket or mortar attacks.
Frazier's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2009, the conflict was marked by a significant insurgent resurgence and a corresponding increase in U.S. troop levels. Zabul Province, where FOB Lagman was located, was a known area of Taliban activity.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded Sergeant Frazier the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to Michigan, where he was buried with military honors in Riverview Cemetery, according to local obituaries and news reports from the time.
Sergeant Frazier is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his unit. His name is inscribed on the Michigan War Veterans Memorial in Lansing and is included in the Pentagon's official casualty lists for the Afghanistan war.
