Their Story

Edward J. Frank II was a sergeant in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York. He was 26 years old and from Yonkers, New York.

On August 11, 2011, Sergeant Frank was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the village of Nalgham, located in the volatile Wardak province of eastern Afghanistan. He was part of a unit conducting counterinsurgency operations in the region.

Frank's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in extensive combat and stability operations against Taliban and other insurgent forces.

His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred. The Department of Defense issued a formal casualty announcement, and his name was added to the official roster of service members killed in the war.

Sergeant Frank is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Yonkers Police Memorial Park. His name is also inscribed on Panel 9W, Line 113 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Albany, New York.
