Dale Edwin Fracker Jr. was a 23-year-old soldier from Apple Valley, California. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army, assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
On November 24, 2004, Fracker was killed in Deh Rawod, a district in Afghanistan's Oruzgan province. According to the Department of Defense, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) while he was on patrol. He was one of two soldiers killed in the attack.
Fracker's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. By late 2004, the initial phase of major combat had ended, but insurgent forces were increasingly using IEDs and ambushes against coalition and Afghan government troops, particularly in the country's southern and eastern regions.
His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Riverside National Cemetery in California. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on November 26, 2004.
Corporal Fracker was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Riverside National Cemetery and is listed on Panel 09W, Line 123 of the Afghanistan Campaign Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
