Their Story

Christopher Scott Fowlkes was from Gaffney, South Carolina. He joined the United States Marine Corps and served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward) deployed from Camp Lejeune.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Fowlkes died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident in Afghanistan. The specific engagement occurred in the country's Helmand province, a major area of operations for coalition forces in 2009. He was evacuated for treatment to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he was pronounced dead on September 10.

Fowlkes was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In 2009, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge, with Marines heavily engaged in counterinsurgency operations in southern provinces like Helmand to secure population centers from Taliban influence.

His death was reported by several news outlets, including The New York Times, which listed him among the service members killed in the war. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on September 11, 2009. His body was returned to South Carolina for burial.

Lance Cpl. Fowlkes is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Pentagon and on local memorials in Cherokee County, South Carolina. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
