Their Story

Jeremy Dale Foshee was a 25-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from the small town of Pisgah, Alabama. He served as a crew member with Company E of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, a specialized unit known for its night-flying capabilities and support of special operations forces.

On February 22, 2002, Sergeant Foshee was killed when the MH-47E Chinook helicopter he was aboard crashed into the sea near Basilan Island in the southern Philippines. The aircraft was on a night training mission in support of Operation Enduring Freedom – Philippines, a U.S. counterterrorism advisory effort. According to U.S. military reports, the crash occurred in poor weather conditions. Ten personnel were on board; Foshee was the only fatality.

The crash happened during the early phase of Operation Enduring Freedom – Philippines, a distinct theater of the broader U.S.-led campaign. The mission, which began in January 2002, involved deploying hundreds of U.S. special operations forces and support personnel to advise and assist the Armed Forces of the Philippines in combating militant groups, including Abu Sayyaf, on the islands of Basilan and Jolo.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced Foshee's death on February 23, 2002. His body was recovered and returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Medal, according to military records.

Sergeant Foshee is memorialized on the Army Special Operations Command Memorial Wall at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His name is also inscribed on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command headquarters.
