Their Story

Stephen Robert Fortunato was a 25-year-old soldier from Danvers, Massachusetts. He served as a Specialist in the United States Army, assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Hood, Texas.

On October 14, 2008, Fortunato was killed by hostile fire in Qazi Bandeh, a village in Afghanistan's Wardak province. According to military reports, he was part of a unit conducting a dismounted patrol when the incident occurred.

Fortunato's death took place during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2008, the conflict saw intense fighting in eastern provinces like Wardak as insurgent activity increased.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His funeral was held in his hometown of Danvers.

Stephen Fortunato is remembered on memorials including the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes memorial in Boston. His name is inscribed on Panel 41E, Line 19 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
