U.S. Army Specialist Jesus Olar Flores Jr., 28, of La Mirada, California, was killed in a hostile incident near the Arghandab River bridge in Afghanistan on October 15, 2009.
Their Story
Specialist Jesus Olar Flores Jr. was a 28-year-old soldier from La Mirada, California. He served as a combat engineer with the 569th Engineer Company, 4th Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
On October 15, 2009, Flores was killed near a bridge over the Arghandab River in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting a route clearance operation when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. The blast killed Flores and another soldier, Specialist Daniel C. Lawson.
Flores died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar, to secure population centers and key infrastructure from Taliban forces.
Flores was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. A memorial service was held at Fort Carson, and he was buried with full military honors.
His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Carson and on the Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum. The 569th Engineer Company later dedicated a training area in his memory.
