Corporal Gregory Michael William Fleury, 23, of Anchorage, Alaska, was a U.S. Marine killed in action at Forward Operating Base Dwyer, Afghanistan, on October 26, 2009.

Their Story

Gregory Michael William Fleury was a 23-year-old Marine from Anchorage, Alaska. He served as a Corporal with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169 (HMLA-169), Marine Aircraft Group 40, part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward) and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Camp Pendleton, California.

According to U.S. Department of Defense records, Corporal Fleury died on October 26, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Dwyer in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The official casualty report listed his death as the result of hostile action. He was one of at least 55 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that month.

Fleury died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2009, U.S. forces, particularly Marines, were heavily engaged in a troop surge aimed at countering a resurgent Taliban in southern provinces like Helmand, where FOB Dwyer served as a key logistics and aviation hub.

His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred. Public records show he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. An online memorial guestbook was signed by fellow service members and family, with one entry from a Marine identifying himself as a member of HMLA-169.

Corporal Fleury is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty list maintained by the Pentagon and on several online veterans' memorial sites. His name is included in the roll of service members from Alaska who have died in the post-9/11 wars.
