First Lieutenant Scott Joseph Fleming, 24, of Marietta, Georgia, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on September 17, 2010.

Their Story

Scott Joseph Fleming was a 24-year-old first lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. The unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 7 under the I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

On September 17, 2010, Fleming was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. He was one of two Marines from his battalion killed that day.

Fleming's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, the war's focus was on a major troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations concentrated in Taliban strongholds like Helmand and Kandahar provinces.

Following his death, Fleming was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Action Ribbon. A memorial service was held for him and his fellow Marine, Lance Cpl. John T. Sparks, at Camp Dwyer in Helmand province on September 22, 2010.

First Lieutenant Fleming was buried at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. His name is inscribed on Panel 2R, Line 90 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
