Their Story
Sean Michael Flannery was a 29-year-old Staff Sergeant from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
According to the Department of Defense, Flannery died on November 22, 2010, in Ghotamudkha, a village in the volatile Zhari district of Kandahar province. He was killed by small arms fire during a dismounted patrol, part of a larger coalition operation to clear the area of insurgent forces.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was marked by intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar, which were strongholds for Taliban and other anti-government forces.
The Department of Defense announced his death on November 24, 2010. He was survived by his wife and other family members. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Flannery was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His name is inscribed on Panel 6W, Line 49 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
