Their Story
Patrick Scott Fitzgibbon was a Private First Class in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. He was 19 years old and from Knoxville, Tennessee.
On August 1, 2009, Fitzgibbon was killed in the village of Mushan, located in Afghanistan's volatile Zabul province. According to U.S. military reports, he died from wounds sustained during a firefight with insurgent forces.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting as international forces attempted to counter a resurgent Taliban insurgency, particularly in the country's southern and eastern regions.
The Department of Defense officially announced his death on August 3, 2009. He was one of at least four U.S. service members killed in hostile incidents across Afghanistan that day.
Patrick Scott Fitzgibbon was one of 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Carson and is included on memorials honoring the fallen from Knoxville.
