Their Story

Krystal Marie Fitts was a 26-year-old specialist from Almeda, California, serving in the U.S. Army. She was assigned to Company E, 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to her service record, her military duties had taken her to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to her deployment to Afghanistan.

On July 17, 2012, Specialist Fitts died in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced her death was the result of a hostile incident. Reports from the time indicate she was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on patrol.

Her death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, marked by a surge and subsequent drawdown of U.S. forces. Kandahar Province remained a major center of insurgent activity and intense combat operations.

Following her death, the Army posthumously awarded Specialist Fitts the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. Her remains were returned to the United States, and she was buried with full military honors.

Specialist Fitts is remembered by her unit and community. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg, and her name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the California Capitol Park in Sacramento.
