Their Story
Zachary Michael Fisher was a 24-year-old sergeant from Ballwin, Missouri. He served as a combat engineer with the 618th Engineer Company, 27th Engineer Battalion (Combat Airborne), 20th Engineer Brigade (Combat), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On July 14, 2010, Sergeant Fisher was killed in Lagman, Zabul province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action. He was reportedly part of a unit conducting route clearance operations, a dangerous task involving the detection and disposal of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Fisher's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The war's intensity peaked in 2010, which became the deadliest year for coalition forces, with over 700 service members killed.
