U.S. Army Specialist Jason David Fingar, 24, of Columbia, Missouri, was killed in a hostile incident on May 22, 2010, in Durai, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Jason David Fingar was a 24-year-old soldier from Columbia, Missouri. He served as a Specialist with the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
On May 22, 2010, Fingar was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol in Durai, a village in the Zhari District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The blast also wounded another soldier.
Fingar's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major offensive in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold, with the Stryker brigade units conducting counterinsurgency operations in rural districts like Zhari.
According to local news reports, Fingar was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His funeral was held in Columbia, Missouri.
He is remembered on memorials at his alma mater, Hickman High School, and in his hometown. His unit, the 5th Stryker Brigade, suffered significant casualties during its 2009-2010 deployment in southern Afghanistan.
