Their Story
Arronn David Fields was a specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to the 381st Military Police Company, 81st Troop Command, based in Plymouth, Indiana. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his service had reportedly included assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On May 21, 2012, Specialist Fields was killed in Qal-ah-ye Mirza Jal, a village in Afghanistan's volatile Wardak province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of hostile enemy action. Specific details of the incident were not widely released, but it occurred in a region known for insurgent activity.
Fields died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death came in the latter phase of the conflict, following the 2009-2011 troop surge, as international forces were increasingly focused on training Afghan security forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations.
Fields's death was officially announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His body was returned to Indiana, where he was buried in Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute.
Fields is remembered on memorials for Indiana's fallen soldiers. His name is inscribed on the Indiana Fallen Heroes Memorial in Indianapolis and is included in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps Regimental Memorial.
