Lance Cpl. Bruce Earnest Ferrell, 21, of Perdido, Alabama, was a U.S. Marine killed in action on August 10, 2009, in Garmsir, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Bruce Earnest Ferrell was from Perdido, Alabama. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a rifleman to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 3, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward). His unit was based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, before deploying to Afghanistan.

On August 10, 2009, Lance Cpl. Ferrell was killed during combat operations in the Garmsir district of Helmand province. According to Marine Corps statements, he died from wounds sustained while engaging enemy forces. His death occurred during a period of intense fighting as U.S. and allied forces conducted a major offensive, Operation Khanjar, in southern Helmand.

Ferrell's death came during the eighth year of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In the summer of 2009, U.S. forces, particularly Marines, were engaged in a significant troop surge aimed at clearing Taliban strongholds in Helmand province, a major center of the insurgency and opium production.

The Department of Defense announced Ferrell's death on August 12, 2009. He was survived by his parents and other family members in Alabama. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors in his home state.

Lance Cpl. Ferrell was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and on other memorials honoring fallen service members from Alabama.
