Their Story

Kyle Ka Eo Fernandez was born in Hawaii and enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Corporal with Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

On October 14, 2004, Fernandez was killed during a combat operation in the village of Miam Do, located in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire during the mission.

Fernandez's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
