Their Story
Kelvin Edgar Feliciano Gutierrez was born in Añasco, Puerto Rico. He served as a Sergeant with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On June 28, 2003, Sergeant Feliciano Gutierrez was killed in Bagram, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED). The incident occurred during a patrol.
His death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2003, major combat operations had transitioned to a phase of counterinsurgency and stabilization, with forces facing persistent attacks from Taliban and other militant groups.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in Puerto Rican media. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Sergeant Feliciano Gutierrez is memorialized on the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial at Fort Bragg and on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at the Pentagon. His name is also listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial in his hometown of Añasco.
