Their Story

Master Sergeant Daniel Louis Fedder was a 34-year-old Marine from Pine City, Minnesota. He served with the 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 7th Engineer Support Battalion, part of the 1st Marine Logistics Group based at Camp Pendleton, California. According to Marine Corps records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On August 27, 2010, Fedder was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Marine Corps listed the cause as hostile action. Specific details of the incident were not widely released in public reports, but it occurred during a period of intense combat operations in the province.

Fedder's death took place during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, Helmand province was a focal point for U.S. and allied forces, who engaged in major offensives against Taliban insurgents. The mission involved clearing territory and training Afghan security forces.
