U.S. Army Sergeant Louis Robert Fastuca, 24, of West Chester, Pennsylvania, died on July 5, 2010, at Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, from hostile enemy action.

Their Story

Louis Robert Fastuca was a 24-year-old from West Chester, Pennsylvania, who served as a sergeant in the United States Army. He was assigned to D Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, operating as part of Task Force Bayonet in eastern Afghanistan.

On July 5, 2010, Sergeant Fastuca was killed by indirect fire at Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan. The base, a major hub for U.S. and coalition forces in the volatile region, came under attack from insurgent rocket or mortar fire. The Department of Defense confirmed his death was the result of hostile enemy action.

Fastuca's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, U.S. forces were engaged in a significant troop surge, focusing on clearing insurgent strongholds in the country's east and south, where Logar Province is located.

His death was reported by several news outlets, including The Philadelphia Inquirer, which noted his Pennsylvania roots. He was survived by his parents and siblings. The Army posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Sergeant Fastuca is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Pennsylvania and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 9W, Line 128 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Pentagon.
