Shawn Michael Farrell II was a 24-year-old sergeant from Accord, a small town in New York's Hudson Valley. He was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York.
On April 28, 2014, Farrell was on a dismounted patrol in the vicinity of Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense reports, his unit came under small-arms fire from enemy forces. Farrell was struck and killed in the engagement.
Farrell's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
