U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Brandon Wade Farley, 30, of Haworth, Texas, was killed in a hostile incident at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, on September 18, 2008.

Their Story

Brandon Wade Farley was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas. A native of Haworth, Texas, he was 30 years old at the time of his death. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On September 18, 2008, Farley was killed at Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, the incident was the result of a hostile attack. Specific details of the engagement were not widely released, but the base was a frequent target for insurgent rocket and mortar fire.

Farley's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan government, and insurgent groups including the Taliban and al-Qaeda. By 2008, violence was intensifying across the country.

The Department of Defense announced his death on September 20, 2008. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.

Staff Sergeant Farley is remembered on memorial walls honoring those who died in Operation Enduring Freedom. He was one of 2356 American service members killed in that conflict.
