U.S. Army Specialist Garrett Anthony Fant, 21, of American Canyon, California, died on September 26, 2011, in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Garrett Anthony Fant was a 21-year-old soldier from American Canyon, California. He served as a Specialist with Troop A, 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
On September 26, 2011, Fant died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in Kandahar province, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. He was one of two soldiers killed in the blast.
Fant was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, Kandahar province remained a major center of insurgent activity and a focus for international forces.
Fant was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military honors. His remains were returned to California, where he was buried with military rites.
He is remembered by family and his unit as a dedicated soldier. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Building in Napa, California.
