U.S. Army Sergeant Shawn Dee Fannin, 32, of Wheelersburg, Ohio, was killed in action on November 12, 2010, at Camp Marmal, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Shawn Dee Fannin was a sergeant in the United States Army, assigned to Company B, 404th Aviation Support Battalion, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas. A native of Wheelersburg, Ohio, the 32-year-old soldier had deployed to multiple regions during his service, including the Philippines, the Horn of Africa, and Afghanistan.

According to the Department of Defense, Sergeant Fannin died on November 12, 2010, from wounds sustained in a non-combat related incident at Camp Marmal in northern Afghanistan. The base, located near Mazar-i-Sharif, served as a major logistics and air hub for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The military did not release further specifics on the circumstances.

Fannin's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission initially focused on dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power, evolving into a protracted counterinsurgency and nation-building effort involving tens of thousands of American and allied troops.

The Army announced his death in a press release on November 15, 2010. He was survived by his wife and children. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.

Sergeant Fannin is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 404th Aviation Support Battalion, provided critical maintenance and logistics for helicopter operations in Afghanistan.
