Staff Sergeant Daniel Neil Fannin was a 30-year-old airman from Morehead, Kentucky. He served on active duty with the United States Air Force, assigned to the 552nd Operations Support Squadron at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
According to the Department of Defense, Fannin died on April 27, 2013, in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The official casualty report listed his death as a result of hostile fire while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. He was reportedly killed in a small arms fire engagement.
Fannin's death occurred during the latter years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, the conflict was in a phase focused on training Afghan security forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations, with Kandahar province remaining a significant area of insurgent activity.
His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast in Grayson, Kentucky. The Air Force posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Fannin is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 40W, Line 28 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum.
