Staff Sergeant Joseph Henry Fankhauser, 30, of Mason, Texas, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on April 22, 2012.
Their Story
Joseph Henry Fankhauser was a 30-year-old staff sergeant from Mason, Texas, serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, 1st Marine Logistics Group, based at Camp Pendleton, California.
On April 22, 2012, Fankhauser was killed in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. The Marine Corps listed the cause as hostile.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, Helmand province remained a major center of insurgent activity and a focal point for international forces, particularly for Marine units engaged in counterinsurgency and stability operations.
The Department of Defense officially announced his death on April 24, 2012. He was survived by his wife and children. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with full military honors.
Staff Sergeant Fankhauser is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 27E, Line 105 of the Afghanistan Campaign Memorial Wall at the museum.
