Their Story
Jason John Fabrizi was a 29-year-old Sergeant First Class from Seffner, Florida. He served with Troop C, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. Before his final deployment to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On July 14, 2009, Fabrizi was killed by enemy small-arms fire during combat operations in Konar province, a rugged and volatile region in eastern Afghanistan bordering Pakistan. He was one of two U.S. soldiers from his unit killed in the engagement, according to military reports.
Fabrizi's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. He was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. The Department of Defense announced his death, along with that of Specialist Matthew R. Sluss-Tiller, 35, of Lancaster, Ohio, who died in the same incident.
Fabrizi is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park in Tampa, Florida. He was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
