Lance Corporal Ralph John Fabbri, a 20-year-old U.S. Marine from Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, was killed in hostile action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on September 28, 2010.

Their Story

Ralph John Fabbri was a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to Headquarters Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California. He was from Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, a small borough in Cambria County. According to the Department of Defense, he was 20 years old at the time of his death.

On September 28, 2010, Fabbri died from wounds sustained during hostile action in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Marine Corps did not release specific details of the incident, but his death was confirmed in a Department of Defense news release that fall.

Fabbri was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a significant focus on counterinsurgency operations in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production. The year 2010 was one of the deadliest for international forces in the war.

Following his death, his body was returned to Pennsylvania. A funeral service was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Gallitzin, and he was buried with full military honors at the church cemetery. Local news outlets reported on the community's mourning and the procession through his hometown.

Lance Corporal Fabbri is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Cambria County Courthouse and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on the 1st Marine Division memorial at Camp Pendleton.
