Their Story
Jered Wayne Ewy was a 33-year-old Second Lieutenant from Edmond, Oklahoma. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 279th Infantry Regiment, part of the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Oklahoma Army National Guard, headquartered in Vinita.
On July 29, 2011, Ewy was killed in Janak Kheyl, a village in the volatile Paktya Province of eastern Afghanistan. The mission evolved from counter-terrorism to a protracted counter-insurgency and nation-building effort against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces.
The Oklahoma National Guard publicly confirmed Ewy's death. He was one of at least 22 service members from Oklahoma killed in Afghanistan by that point in the war. His loss was noted in local media reports from his hometown.
