U.S. Army Sergeant Jerry Randall Evans Jr., 23, of Eufaula, Alabama, was killed in action on August 7, 2009, in the Sayed Abad District of Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jerry Randall Evans Jr. was a 23-year-old from Eufaula, Alabama. He served as a sergeant in Company A, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York.

On August 7, 2009, Sergeant Evans was killed by enemy small-arms fire during combat operations in the Sayed Abad District of Wardak province, Afghanistan. The district was a known area of insurgent activity.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation focused on counter-insurgency and stability missions.

According to the Department of Defense, Evans was one of two soldiers from his unit killed in the same engagement. His body was returned to the United States for burial.

Sergeant Evans was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and is listed among the 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
