Private First Class Jason Hill Estopinal, 21, of Dallas, Georgia, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on February 15, 2010.
Their Story
Jason Hill Estopinal was a 21-year-old Marine from Dallas, Georgia. He served as a Private First Class with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, part of Regimental Combat Team 7, which was deployed to Afghanistan from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On February 15, 2010, Estopinal was killed by hostile fire in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. He was reportedly on a foot patrol when he was struck by small arms fire. The Department of Defense announced his death two days later.
Estopinal's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. He was killed during a major troop surge in 2010, a period of intense fighting focused on clearing Taliban strongholds in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar provinces.
His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. The town of Dallas held a memorial service, and his high school remembered him as a dedicated student and athlete.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Georgia National Cemetery and on online veterans' memorials. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, he was one of 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
