Endsley, Zachary Ryan
Corporal Zachary Ryan Endsley, 21, of Spring, Texas, was a U.S. Army infantryman. He died on July 23, 2007, in the Arghandab District of Zabul province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Zachary Ryan Endsley was born in 1986 and grew up in Spring, Texas, a community north of Houston. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as an infantryman to Company B, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, based in Hohenfels, Germany. The battalion was part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
On July 23, 2007, Corporal Endsley was killed during a dismounted patrol in the Arghandab District of Zabul province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his unit came under small-arms fire from enemy forces during the operation.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2007, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's southern and eastern provinces where Taliban forces remained active.
The Department of Defense announced his death on July 25, 2007. He was survived by his parents and a sister. His body was returned to Texas, where he was buried with military honors.
Corporal Endsley was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Pasadena, Texas.
