First Sergeant Kenneth Brian Elwell, 33, of Erie, Pennsylvania, was a U.S. Army soldier serving with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team. He died on July 17, 2011, in Talukan, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Kenneth Brian Elwell was a 33-year-old first sergeant from Erie, Pennsylvania. He was a senior non-commissioned officer assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. According to the U.S. Army, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On July 17, 2011, Elwell was killed in the village of Talukan, located in the Ghazni province of eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. Reports from the time indicate the area was a known insurgent stronghold, and U.S. forces were engaged in clearing operations.
Elwell's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with international forces heavily engaged in counter-insurgency operations across provinces like Ghazni.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded Elwell the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held at Fort Wainwright, and he was buried with full military honors.
First Sergeant Elwell is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Benning and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, continued its deployment in Afghanistan following his death.
