Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jody Lynn Egnor, 32, of Middletown, Ohio, was a U.S. Army helicopter pilot with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. He was killed in a crash near Basilan Island, Philippines, on February 22, 2002.

Their Story

Jody Lynn Egnor was a 32-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 from Middletown, Ohio. He served as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army's elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, known as the 'Night Stalkers,' which provides aviation support for special operations forces.

On February 22, 2002, Egnor was one of ten U.S. service members killed when their MH-47E Chinook helicopter crashed into the Sulu Sea near Basilan Island in the southern Philippines. The aircraft was returning to its base after a mission. According to U.S. military statements, the crash was an accident, with no evidence of hostile fire.

The crash occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom – Philippines, a distinct theater of the broader U.S.-led campaign against militant groups. The operation involved U.S. military advisors assisting the Armed Forces of the Philippines in combating Abu Sayyaf and other Islamist militant groups based in the southern islands.

The incident was the single deadliest for U.S. forces in the Philippines since World War II. The bodies of the ten personnel were recovered from the sea. The U.S. Department of Defense announced the casualties on February 23, 2002.

Egnor was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal with Valor device. He is memorialized at the 160th SOAR Memorial Wall at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and his name is inscribed on the Global War on Terrorism Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum.
