Staff Sergeant Brandon Forrest Eggleston was a 29-year-old soldier from Candler, North Carolina. He was assigned to Company B, 4th Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On April 26, 2012, Eggleston was killed in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations.
Eggleston's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, a surge of U.S. forces had been deployed and was beginning to draw down, with combat operations increasingly focused on training Afghan forces and targeted counterinsurgency.
