Eggers, Daniel William
Captain Daniel William Eggers, 28, of Cape Coral, Florida, was a U.S. Army Special Forces officer. He was killed by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on May 29, 2004.
Their Story
Daniel William Eggers was a captain in the United States Army, assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was a native of Cape Coral, Florida.
On May 29, 2004, Captain Eggers was part of a mounted patrol in Kandahar province. His vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED). The blast killed Eggers and three other soldiers: Staff Sergeant Robert K. McGee, Sergeant First Class Michael R. Peterman, and Private First Class James P. White. A fifth soldier was wounded.
Eggers died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The mission aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban regime from power. By 2004, operations had shifted to counter-insurgency and stabilization efforts, with significant fighting in the country's southern provinces.
The Department of Defense announced the casualties on May 30, 2004. Captain Eggers was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and a young son.
Captain Eggers is memorialized on the Special Operations Memorial at Fort Bragg and at the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Tampa, where he was a graduate and ROTC cadet. His name is inscribed on Panel 1W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
