Lance Corporal Edward Joe Dycus, 22, of Greenville, Mississippi, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on February 1, 2012.
Their Story
Edward Joe Dycus was a 22-year-old from Greenville, Mississippi. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, of the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). His unit was based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On February 1, 2012, Dycus was killed while conducting combat operations in the volatile Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated.
Dycus was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2012, Helmand province remained a primary battleground, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other insurgent forces.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in regional and military news outlets. He was one of several U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in early February 2012.
Lance Corporal Dycus was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton and is included in memorials honoring those who died in the Afghanistan War.
