Their Story
Kielin Terrell Dunn was a 19-year-old Marine from Chesapeake, Virginia. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of the 2nd Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of the Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan Forward, under Regimental Combat Team 7.
On February 18, 2010, Lance Corporal Dunn was killed by hostile action in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announcement did not provide further specifics on the incident, which was one of several reported in the province that day.
Dunn's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In early 2010, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a major offensive, Operation Moshtarak, aimed at clearing Taliban strongholds in Helmand province, including the district of Marjah.
Following his death, Dunn's body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Chesapeake. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
Lance Corporal Dunn is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Virginia War Museum and on online veterans' memorials. He was survived by his mother and other family members.
