Joshua Robert Dumaw was a 23-year-old Marine from Spokane Valley, Washington. He served as a Corporal with the Military Police Company, Regimental Combat Team 2, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, part of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Corporal Dumaw died on June 22, 2010, in Delaram, Nimruz province, Afghanistan. The official release stated his death resulted from hostile action. Media reports from the time, citing military officials, indicated he was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) while conducting a dismounted patrol.
Dumaw's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2010, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a major offensive, Operation Hamkari, focused on securing Kandahar and surrounding provinces. Delaram, a district in Nimruz province, was a known transit area for insurgent activity and IED emplacement along Highway 1, a critical national ring road.
His death was reported by local and national news outlets, including The Spokesman-Review in his home state of Washington. The Department of Defense formally announced his death on June 24, 2010. He was survived by his parents and siblings.
Corporal Dumaw was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Spokane County Veterans Memorial Arena and on online veteran tribute pages maintained by fellow service members and family.
