Their Story
Christopher Re'shawn Drake was a 20-year-old from Tickfaw, Louisiana, who served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was assigned to the 1084th Transportation Company, 165th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 139th Regional Support Group, based in Louisiana. His unit was mobilized for deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On May 26, 2013, Drake was killed in Shank, Afghanistan, in what the U.S. Department of Defense classified as a hostile incident. Shank, also known as Forward Operating Base Shank, was a major base in Logar Province, an area with significant insurgent activity. The specific details of the engagement were not released in initial casualty reports.
Drake's death occurred during the final phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, a major troop surge had ended, and the mission was transitioning to a train-and-advise role ahead of the planned withdrawal of combat forces. The period remained dangerous, with sustained attacks on coalition personnel and bases.
Following his death, Drake's body was returned to Louisiana. A funeral service was held in Independence, Louisiana, on June 8, 2013. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to military records and local news coverage of the services.
Spc. Drake is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Jackson and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on the Defense Casualty Analysis System, the official record of U.S. fatalities in the conflict.
