Donahue, Michael Joseph
U.S. Army Major Michael Joseph Donahue, 41, of Columbus, Ohio, was killed in a hostile incident in Kabul, Afghanistan, on September 16, 2014.
Their Story
Michael Joseph Donahue was a 41-year-old major in the United States Army. He served with the Corps Signal Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A native of Columbus, Ohio, he was on a deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On September 16, 2014, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near a NATO convoy on the outskirts of Kabul. According to reports from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the attack targeted a convoy that included a vehicle carrying Major Donahue and British Army Major General Timothy Radford, who was the deputy commander of the NATO-led mission. Major Donahue and a civilian contractor were killed in the blast. Major General Radford survived with injuries.
The attack occurred during the final phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2014, international forces were in the process of transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan national forces, though insurgent attacks in and around the capital remained frequent.
The Pentagon confirmed Major Donahue's death the following day. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.
Major Donahue was survived by his wife and three children. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense and on the memorial wall at Fort Bragg.
