Corporal Alex Frank Domion, 21, of Richfield Springs, New York, was a U.S. Marine killed in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on October 31, 2012.
Their Story
Alex Frank Domion was a 21-year-old from the village of Richfield Springs in upstate New York. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a Corporal to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On October 31, 2012, Corporal Domion was killed while conducting combat operations in the volatile Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. The Marine Corps announced he died from wounds sustained in an enemy attack. No further specifics about the engagement were released by the Department of Defense.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission evolved from counter-terrorism to a protracted counterinsurgency and nation-building effort. By 2012, the war was at its peak intensity, with Helmand province being a focal point of Taliban resistance and a primary area of operations for U.S. Marine units.
Following his death, Domion's body was returned to his hometown. A funeral service was held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Richfield Springs. Corporal Domion was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his unit. His death was recorded as one of the more than 2,300 U.S. military fatalities in the Afghanistan war.
