Staff Sgt. Patrick Ryan Dolphin, 29, of Moscow, Pennsylvania, was a U.S. Marine killed in action on July 31, 2011, in Herat, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Patrick Ryan Dolphin grew up in Moscow, Pennsylvania, a borough in the Pocono Mountains. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a staff sergeant assigned to the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 31, 2011, Staff Sgt. Dolphin was killed during combat operations in Herat province, in western Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire. He was 29 years old.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission initially focused on dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power, evolving into a protracted counterinsurgency and stability operation. The conflict resulted in thousands of U.S. military casualties.
