U.S. Army Staff Sergeant John Glen Doles, 29, of Claremore, Oklahoma, was killed by enemy fire in Sha Wali Kot, Afghanistan, on September 30, 2005.

Their Story

John Glen Doles was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment. The unit was part of Task Force Bayonet, based at Camp Ederle in Vicenza, Italy. Doles, a native of Claremore, Oklahoma, had previously deployed on missions to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa during his military career.

On September 30, 2005, Doles was killed during combat operations in the Sha Wali Kot district of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his unit was engaged by enemy forces and he was struck by small-arms fire.

Doles died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2005, operations in southern provinces like Kandahar involved counter-insurgency missions against Taliban and other militant forces. The Sha Wali Kot district was a known area of insurgent activity.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in several news outlets. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. A memorial service was held in Italy, and he was buried in the United States.

Staff Sergeant Doles was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in Oklahoma and at the U.S. Army Garrison in Italy. His name is inscribed on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at the Museum of the Kansas National Guard.
