Their Story
Adam Eugene Dobereiner was a 21-year-old soldier from Moline, Illinois. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, assigned to the 937th Route Clearance Company, 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On November 18, 2011, Dobereiner was killed in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was reportedly part of a route clearance patrol, a unit tasked with finding and disabling improvised explosive devices.
Dobereiner's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with a significant U.S. troop surge focused on insurgent strongholds in southern provinces like Kandahar.
The Army officially announced his death on November 21, 2011. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in Rock Island National Cemetery in Illinois. His hometown newspaper, The Dispatch / The Rock Island Argus, reported on the funeral services held in his honor.
Dobereiner is memorialized on the website of the 36th Engineer Brigade and on the Fallen Heroes Project. His name is included on the Illinois Veterans Memorial at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
