U.S. Army Private First Class Michael Richard Dinterman, 18, of Littlestown, Pennsylvania, was killed in action on September 6, 2008, at Observation Post Restrepo in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Michael Richard Dinterman was an 18-year-old soldier from Littlestown, Pennsylvania. He served as a Private First Class with Company B, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Hood, Texas. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008.

On September 6, 2008, Dinterman was killed by enemy small-arms fire while his unit was engaged in combat operations at Observation Post Restrepo. The remote outpost was located in the Korengal Valley of eastern Afghanistan's Kunar Province, an area known for intense fighting.

Dinterman's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In 2008, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other militant groups, particularly in the country's eastern mountainous regions.

The Department of Defense announced his death on September 8, 2008. His body was returned to Pennsylvania, where he was buried with military honors in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Littlestown.

Dinterman is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his unit. The outpost where he died, OP Restrepo, was named for a fallen medic and was later featured in the documentary film 'Restrepo,' which chronicled the deployment of his battalion in the Korengal Valley.
