Corporal Scott Gene Dimond, 39, of Franklin, New Hampshire, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in hostile action on October 13, 2008, in Lashkar Gah, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Scott Gene Dimond was a 39-year-old soldier from Franklin, New Hampshire. He served with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment, a New Hampshire Army National Guard unit based in Manchester. According to unit records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On October 13, 2008, Corporal Dimond was killed in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand Province, in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile fire. A contemporaneous Associated Press report noted he died from wounds sustained when his patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device and then engaged with small arms fire.

Dimond's death occurred during a period of intensified fighting in the Afghanistan War, known as Operation Enduring Freedom. By 2008, Taliban insurgents had regrouped and were mounting a sustained campaign, particularly in the southern provinces. The use of improvised explosive devices against coalition and Afghan forces had become the leading cause of casualties.

Following his death, Dimond was posthumously promoted from specialist to corporal. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held in New Hampshire, where he was remembered by his battalion commander as a dedicated soldier and a leader.

Corporal Dimond is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 41E, Line 28 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
